Before You Start

Here are a few things to consider before you start building your affiliate site:

Site Creation

Site Marketing

Make sure that you consider how you plan to advertise your site before you start to build. If you plan on generating traffic via search engines and directories, you may want to leave off that Flash intro, most of those fancy graphics you designed, and all of those neat JavaScript snippets you found. Generally speaking, the site characteristics that were just mentioned are not search engine friendly. However, if you plan on generating most of your traffic from banner ads, pay-per-click listings, forums, discussion groups, offline methods, etc., that Flash movie on your home page can increase your site salability and conversion rate. One thing worth mentioning is that the products we offer really do sell themselves. Typically, our affiliates don't need all of that pazzazz to see high conversion rates.

For beginners who know absolutely nothing about computer programming or web design, we recommend the following options:

  • Use web-based site design software. One company we recommend using is www.istores.com. The advantage in using this type of service is that you need no knowledge of computer programming whatsoever. Just point and click. It's about $30 a month for the service. The downside to using web-based site design software you have no access to the source HTML, you have almost no control over the site layout and structure, you cannot use the customizable affiliate order form, and it's $30 a month (versus $10-15 a month for normal hosting).
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2002. FrontPage provides for more flexibility than the web-based software, but the learning curve is somewhat steeper. Nonetheless, if you have experience with Office programs, you will probably catch on fairly quick. A copy of FrontPage is about $170. Try www.nextag.com to compare prices online.
  • Macromedia DreamWeaver MX. DreamWeaver does require some computer programming skills, or at least the ability to recognize code and some common programming languages. Using DreamWeaver is an excellent way for one learn basic html and other common programming languages. Visit the Macromedia site for more info.

If you're looking for good graphic building/editing software, we recommend you check out the following:

  • For novice to veteran affiliates, Adobe PhotoShop is the obvious choice. PhotoShop has everything you could want and more. Downside is that PhotoShop has a huge learning curve (and a $500 sticker price). But veteran affiliates, read on.
  • For beginner to veteran affiliates and everyone in between, Ulead PhotoImpact is the answer. PhotoImpact has almost every feature that PhotoShop has, but is very easy to learn and work in. And you can get a copy for less than $100.

If you're new to the search engine game, first of all, stay away from those "Submit your site to 4,000 search engines for a $1" sites. There are probably less than 7 or 8 that you would want to submit to, and to narrow it down even more, only 3 or 4 are really crucial. Here's a list of free places that are worth submitting your site:

For a small fee, you can have your site included in these search engines as well:

When you are positive that your site looks good and is fully functional, submit your site to 2 of the most important places on the internet:

Targeting the wrong keywords in this industry can result in a low conversion rate and low search engine rankings. Wordtracker.com has an excellent tool to help combat this problem. Basically, you type in a keyword such as "phentermine" and their software tells you how many times people have searched for that keyword, similar keywords people are searching for (such as "buy phentermine online"), and how many sites are competing for that keyword. Wordtracker is really a must-have for any serious affiliate. You can try out their free trial as many times as you want to by clicking here.

First of all, you may be asking yourself why you would want to do that. It is more difficult to get an affiliate site into popular search engines like Yahoo! and the Open Directory Project (although it can be done,especially in Yahoo). Generally speaking, Overture will not let you open a pay-per-click account if you're an affiliate. In addition, some web surfers tend to either shy away from affiliate sites, or go straight to the affiliated site without clicking on an affiliate link. Not to mention that some affiliates would just like it to look like their own.

The major advantage here is that you can customize the look and feel of your order form to make it "match" your site.

Here's what you do: Create three pages in your web and call them Patient Responsibility, Informed Consent, and Nitroglycerins. Copy and paste our text for each of those pages into your pages. Then make sure that the links to those pages from your order form are properly formatted. You're done.

This is very easy to do. All you have to do is set up a mailbox on your server that looks something like patientsupport@mysite.com or patientcare@mysite.com or whatever@mysite.com. You would then forward that mail to patientcare@platinum-rx.com.

Works best with Internet Explorer. Netscape Users won't get any errors, but instead of the bookmark link, they will see a message reminding them to bookmark the site. Copy the code into the BODY of your HTML document:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">

<!-- Begin
if ((navigator.appName == "Microsoft Internet Explorer") && (parseInt(navigator.appVersion) >= 4)) {

var url="http://www.page-to-be-bookmarked.com";
var title="Phentermine Refills";

document.write('<A HREF="javascript:window.ext');
document.write('ernal.AddFavorite(url,title);" ');
document.write('onMouseOver=" window.status=');
document.write("'Bookmark this page for refills'; return true ");
document.write('"onMouseOut=" window.status=');
document.write("' '; return true ");
document.write('">Bookmark this page for refills</a>');
}
else {
var msg = "Bookmark this page for refills";
if(navigator.appName == "Netscape") msg += " (CTRL-D)";
document.write(msg);
}

// End -->
</script>

If you want to add a Flash movie to your site and don't have the extra time or money to learn the software, try using a program called Swish. It's very easy to learn and use, and it exports movies in .swf format just like the real thing. Best of all, you can get 2 licenses for $50. The movie on the Platinum-Rx home page was built with the Swish software. Click here for more info.

We have to mention Ulead PhotoImpact again because it is so much easier to learn and use than PhotoShop. And it's about $400 cheaper. We would highly recommend it to any novice affiliate. Click here to visit the Ulead site.

First, educate yourself on exactly what search engines consider when ranking a page. Click here for an excellent article for beginners in the search engine optimization (s.e.o.) field. Second, read through as many s.e.o. forums as you possibly can. We also recommend that you sign up for a few s.e.o. newsletters. An great place to start you s.e.o. education is www.searchenginewatch.com. A membership is $59 for 6 months and is worth every penny. Mastering s.e.o. takes alot of research, hard work, and dedication. In the online prescribing industry, a talented search engine optimizer will make anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 a month, every month. No joke, not exaggerating, seriously.
